He evangelized The Huron. He lived with them, embraced their customs, mastered their language, and wrote a catechism for them. He composed the Huron Carol, Canadian's oldest Christmas song. He was captured by an Iroquois, ritually tortured, and killed. Holy men and women, blessed of the ages, pray, o pray for us. 2.Saint IsaacJogues was born in France, a young Jesuit missionary. He came to the Sault Ste. Marie falls. He was warmly welcomed. On his way by canoe to the country of Huron, Jogues was captured by a war party of Mohawk of the Iroquois Confederacy. He was ritually tortured and lost two fingers on his right hand. He survived and tried to teach his captors about Christianity. He was the first Catholic priest who visited Manhattan Island. He returned to new France to continue his missions. In the spring of 1646, he was attacked with a tomahawk and died. We believe that through the shedding of his blood, the faith of Christians becomes strengthened day by day and brings us peace. He was highly esteemed for virtue and learning. He was appointed to the mission at Sault Ste Marie. where he remained till his death. He bound himself by vow never to leave the mission. He was martyred by what is described as a „renegade” Huron. Saint Noël Chabanel, pray for us. Holy men and women, blessed of the ages, pray, o pray for us. 4.Saint AnthonyDaniel was born in Normandy. He was first stationed at Cape Breton. In the time when most of the Huron were absent The Iroquois made a sudden attack on the mission. Fr. Anthony Daniel did all in his power to aid his people. He hurried to the chapel where the women, children and old men were gathered giving them general absolution and baptizing the catechumens. He himself made no attempt to escape, but calmly advanced to meet the enemy, who discharged at him a shower of arrows. His body was consumed by fire in the burning chapel. He was first posted to the mission at Sault Ste. Marie among the Huron. He was captured by the Iroquois and taken to the nearby mission at St Ignace. There he was tortured before being killed. We believe that through the shedding of his blood, the faith of Christians becomes strengthened day by day and brings us peace. Saint GabrielLalemant, pray for us. Holy men and women, blessed of the ages, pray, o pray for us. 6.Saint RenéGoupil was a French lay missionary. He was a surgeon. He volunteered to serve as a lay missionary working to assist the Jesuit Fathers. He was charged with caring for the sick and wounded at the hospital. His work primarily involved wound dressings and bloodlettings. He travelled to Huron missions and was captured by the Iroquois taken to their territory and tortured. After teaching the native children the sign of Cross, he was killed with a tomahawk. He was the first of the North American Martyrs to receive the crown of martyrdom and the first canonized Catholic martyr in North America. Saint RenéGoupil, pray for us. Holy men and women, blessed of the ages, pray, o pray for us. 7.Saint Jean de Lalande born in Normandy, came to Canada as a lay brother to serve with the Jesuit Fathers. He was 19 years old and Lalande was attacked on the road by a Mohawk party. He was taken to their village. But he was killed the next day after Isaac Jogues, when he recovered the body of Fr Jogues from the paths of the village. Through his intercession we ask that we also become witnesses of God's love. 8.Saint Charles Garnier was born March 25, 1606, in Paris. He became priest 1636 and he came to Quebec and worked as missionary among the Huron also providing medical assistance during the epidemic. Arriving at the mission of St. Joseph warned of death threats at the hands of the Iroquois, he continued to prepare the Huron for the sacrament of baptism. During the siege He baptized the catechumens gathered there and during the liturgy he was killed by the Iroquois.
